I am first cousin to this wonderful man who I am missing every day of my life. We were close as two relations could be. I have this Giant Void in my life and it will never be filled, that is how much he will be missed by myself and my family. I live in Tucson where we grew up, Carlos and myself. I am sad, I have no one to call in Austin.

<img src="http://www.serieproject.org/galleries/serie10/pstr13.jpg" alt="Untitled" />

I have chosen to comment on Sergio Rodriguez’ untitled piece in Series 10. The very first thing I saw when I first looked at this was the use of the many colors and how it spans from top to bottom and left to right. The red in the upper left hand corner, what does that represent…blood, fire, hot lava or is it simply just a coincidence. I personally like the idea of hot lava seeing how there’s 2 sets of mountains in the background (pink and blue). The orange and grey coloring at the bottom of the perspective line represents a reflection from the water of sunlight from the sun. In the middle of the piece there seems to be a shape that looks like a figure with a big, white, toothed snarl standing in the middle ground. Not sure if this was done on purpose but I also see 2 big red eyes staring at me from what looks like the torso of the figure, or is that supposed to be another face? Now let’s talk space…I love how Sergio has used the entire space and filled it with color and left no “white space” not that “white space” is bad but your eye is constantly moving to see what’s next. Balance is a definite, considering the constant color and shape from top to bottom and left to right there’s no doubt that this image has balance. I know I keep going back to “color” but I think it’s the prime element in this painting the texture is created by the multiple colors. The layering of the colors gives it a very textured look and might even make you want to reach out and touch it if you were to see it in person.

<img src="http://www.serieproject.org/galleries/serie14/pstr7.jpg" alt="Los Dos Corazones" />

I have chosen to comment on Delilah Montoya’s Los Dos Corazones in series 14. It is very much an amazing piece of art, the color is very strong. In the painting I see red and yellow rose petals and a locket with a picture in the middle. It has a very high intensity, especially the red and yellow colors. I like how the red flower petals match the locket, very good balance. There is a strong contrast between light and dark, and overall, the lines are very defined. I don’t feel either sad or happy when looking at this, the colors are nice and unique, and petals usually make people feel sad, but I mainly feel “curious,” and maybe a bit confused. I’d like to have more details about what’s going on that are not available in the painting. As I view this piece, my eyes lean towards the person in the locket, the center point of the painting, the main idea. Maybe the person in the locket was very important to her in her life, so she painted this in memory of him. It almost looks as if at any moment the hand will close the locket and grasp it with strong feelings. In general, I think this is an interesting and unique artwork. I enjoy the bright colors and I would hang it up in my house if someone gave it to me. I appreciate the technical skill it took to create such a painting, and might be inspired to create a painting similar to this in the future, but perhaps with another subject.

Josephine Hughey
BGD M12:00
Coranado
Serie 6 (1998-1999)
Artist: Candace Briceno
Title: Las Rosas de Mi Velita

<img src="http://www.serieproject.org/galleries/serie6/pstr2.jpg" alt="La Rosas de Mi Velita" />

•Space - The artist used the negative space as a complimenting
element, leaving the focus on the arrangement of roses and their
relationship to one another. (Aerial view)

• Line – Thin wavy lines were used in the image to convey the delicate
nature of the roses, while continues thick brush strokes surround the
roses.

• Shape – The artist chose Organic shapes to represent the roses
rather than geometrical shapes, giving the roses a more natural feel.

• Value – Light and dark values are utilized in both the roses
themselves and the background. The values in the roses create depth
and separation between the pedals giving the flowers structure, while
the values in the background support the roses.

• Color – The warm primary color of the roses contrast the secondary
colors in the background which cause the roses to stand out.

• Balance- the asymmetrical balance of the image conveys the expected
feel of nature and its products (roses).

• Rhythm- the long wavy brush strokes in the background and
positioning of the roses in the image, create visual rhythm making the
repetitious roses look as if they were being carried away in the wind.

• Harmony – the image is mainly created around the harmony between the
collection of roses. The similarities of each rose to the other,
creates a simple harmony of colors shapes and space to a certain
degree.

• Texture – I think there may be some illusion of texture in both the
roses and the background which complements the delicate characteristic
nature of the overall image.

• Form – the roses display form in that they appear 3 dimensional.

Serie 6 (1998-1999)
Artist: Candace Briceno
Title: Las Rosas de Mi Velita

•Space – The artist used the negative space as a complimenting
element, leaving the focus on the arrangement of roses and their
relationship to one another.
