Just wanted to give everybody a quick notice about an upcoming Serie show.
A mix of old and new Serie Project prints will go up at the Emmanuel Gallery in Denver, Colorado, tonight. Here is a blurb from the website:
Emmanuel Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of two shows, Arte Chicano/a: the Serie Project and Luis Jimenez: Selections for Colorado Collectors on October 8 with a gallery talk and reception on October 14 at 7:00pm. Arte Chicano/a features twenty-seven Latin American artists who have worked in the Austin, Texas Coronado Studio. This exhibition was guest curated by Dr. George Rivera of Boulder. Coronado Studio is led by Sam Coronado. The mission of the Serie Project is to produce, promote, and exhibit the work of Latino artists, and to make the production and sale of the prints affordable for both artists and patrons.
The Serie Project began in 1993. Each year, approximately fifteen artists are invited to Coronado Studio. Serigraphy, or screen printing, is the exclusive medium used to create these prints. This non-profit print studio is one of few in the United States who invite artists to create original work, collaborate with a master printer, learn how to create a serigraph, and produce an edition of fifty prints. The artists keep one half of the prints they produce and the Serie Project keeps the other for sale and exhibition.
Arte Chicano/a includes the following artists: Tony Ortega, Alma Lopez, Alejandra Almuelle, Rene Alvarado, Joe Lopez, Francisco Delgado, Anabelle Rodriguez, Carlos Pineda, Luis Valderas, Miguel Escobedo, Malaquias Montoya, Sandra Fernandez, Brian Johnson, Celina Hinojosa, Jimmy Peña, Claudio Aguillon, Sam Coronado, Steve Cruz, Juan Hernandez, Fidencio Duran, Luis Gutierrez, Mauro H. Garza, Rudy Fernandez, George Rivera, Quintin Gonzalez, and Carlos Fresquez. The imagery deals with current issues of identity, both cultural and political.
Luis Jimenez: Selections from Colorado Collectors will include large scale prints exhibited in the mezzanine gallery. There has been much talk about his ‘Blue Mustang’ at DIA since its installation in 2008. This exhibition shows the depth of Jimenez’s work beyond that polarizing piece of public art. His work is full of beauty, grit, and movement. Jimenez borrows from folklore, iconic heroes, and images of the working class to compose extremely powerful works of art. Born in El Paso Texas in 1940, he is the sonof an illegal immigrant. Jimenez died while finishing his ‘Blue Mustang’ piece for Denver in 2006.
