Latino Printing Consortium to meet in Austin

Consejo Gráfico, the country’s only independent network of Latino print organizations, will convene in Austin for their annual meeting from November 20-22, 2008. The organization will meet to discuss new projects, host a series of panel discussions, and exhibit their works.

Consejo Gráfico was formed in 2002 to advance the legacy and viability of Latino printmaking in the United States. It works to foster opportunities that enable Latino artists to engage in printmaking and strives to gain appreciation for the importance and value of the Latino printmaking tradition.

Next November, Consejo Gráfico, in conjunction with member organization the Serie Project of Austin, will host a symposium titled “U.S. Latino Printmaking in the 21st Century.” Member organizations, as well as art collectors and art historians, will discuss the history and future of Latino printmaking, and the importance of preserving these works of art for future generations. The panels will be held Nov. 21 at the Texas Union on UT campus with free admission.

Later in the week, the Consejo Gráfico will exhibit selected works from their portfolio “Creando Fuerza, Cambio, y Permanencia” (Creating Strength, Change, and Permanence”). The Nov. 22 exhibit will take place at Mexic-Arte Museum with free admission.

Latino printmaking in the U.S. began as early as the 1940s by Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera and David Siquieros. The Chicano movements of the 1960s used poster printmaking to effect political change, and today, printmaking is a growing medium among Latino artists.

Serie Project Celebrates Quinceañera

The Serie Project, Texas’ only Latino silk-screen organization, will celebrate its 15th production season to coincide with the 2008 Consejo Gráfico Conference.

The Serie Project, a member of the Consejo Gráfico, will host the organization’s annual meeting and will also hold three days of festivities throughout Austin free for the public to attend.

On Nov. 20, Serie and Consejo Gráfico artists will visit the Blanton Museum of Art to view the NYGW exhibit. On Nov. 21, a retrospective of selected works from Serie’s first 14 years will be exhibited at the Mexican American Culture Center; and, on Nov. 22, the premiere of Serie XV will be shown at Mexic-Arte Museum and will coincide with the Consejo Gráfico exhibition “Creando Fuerza.” Admission is free for all events.
