Ben Mata works in oil on aluminum and on canvas. Educated at Palo Alto Community College in San Antonio, and at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, he is most influenced by the abstract expressionist movement of the 1950s, as is clear in his print I-35 N. The work is made up of red and blue dots, red circles, and white and yellowish lines, on a red background. The viewer may choose to understand the title as anchoring its abstract image to something representational, such as a deadly spill on the highway.
