Jimmy Peña began drawing before he began writing. His mother taught him about repetitive line, and his father taught him about perspective and vanishing points. He taught himself to paint at the age of 14, and has been working in charcoals, acrylics, wood, and metal all his life. For him, art is the only way he can voice an opinion or idea without using his own words, and has always said something about the society and the time in which it is made. The print Gravity has a background collage of newspaper headlines and articles on the 2003 war in Iraq from the local paper of Corpus Christi. The seated figure is wearing the images from the photographs of some of the articles.
