Roisel Ramirez

Aztec Graffiti, 2003

Screenprint

22 x 16 in

Edition of 50

Roisel Ramirez spent his formative years in Laredo, and moved to Austin in 1988, where he attended the University of Texas. He works in large-scale sculpture and public art, and is socially involved in the community as an artist who works with at-risk youth. He has also served as an art instructor for the City of Austin's Totally Cool, Totally Art program. About Aztec Graffiti, he says, "My pieces are created by rapid, physical mark making as well as textural, layering design effects. This produces an oceanic form consisting of smaller nonrepresentational images throughout the piece. It's patterned after the anomalies and anthropomorphic imageries created by decaying materials such as antique cars and old buildings. The color scheme is also inspired by found objects, namely rusted metal. My two-dimensional work often draws a similar reading to that of my sculptures, which portray the competitive relationship between our civilization and its creations."
