Miguel Escobedo

Escudo, 2004

Screenprint

12.5 x 14 in

Edition of 50

The lines that make borders between countries are ones that have been blurred throughout Miguel Escobedo's life. Born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Escobedo's work, like the border town he was born in, is blurred between the mediums of etchings, ceramics, and encaustic paintings. Influenced by minimalism and the Mexican printmaking techniques of Posada, Escobedo's works have been featured internationally from Kyoto, Japan to Portugal, and all the way back to his current residence in El Paso, Texas. Escobedo's curiosity into different art mediums earned him a BFA in printmaking from the University of Texas at El Paso. Currently, Escobedo crafts his work with etchings, reductions, and aquatints, using simple lines to convey Mexican and American symbolic meaning. And at only 28 years of age, Escobedo's curiosity continues: "I believe it is the artist's job to see and explore for the rest of society." The minimalist Robert Morris would undoubtedly agree, then, that Escobedo's explorations are merely beginning: "Simplicity of shape does not necessarily equate with simplicity of experience."
