Born in Taylor, Texas, Carla Nickerson received her BFA from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. She works primarily in acrylic, oil, graphite, colored pencil, and fabric, and is influenced by the Renaissance masters, the Impressionists, and most greatly inspired by the work of the Harlem Renaissance. Her art is a record of what happens in the world, and aims to "promote healing, understanding, and acceptance among people of all cultures." Reynaldo represents the regality of the subject, his natural pose, and the "pride, beauty and perseverance" Cubanos demonstrate still during an outdated United States embargo.
