Born and reared in southern California, Gail Dawson moved to the San Francisco Bay area as soon as she was able, and there attended The University of California at Berkeley where she received her BA in Art History and MA in Education. She moved to Austin, Texas in 1994 and received her BFA and MFA in Studio Art from The University of Texas at Austin. The subject of her work is focuses on two figures: birds and people. By working between media, translating video to paintings and drawings, drawings and paintings to video, she retains a "recognizable reference to the original technological format" while drawing attention to the tactile and visual qualities of both. She maintains a sincerity in creating images that employ such a "newer way of seeing".
