Lizette Lugo of Dorado, Puerto Rico graduated from The University of the Sacred Heart in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Producing primarily in the serigraph technique, she is influenced by the printmaking movement and tradition in Puerto Rico, Naif art, and Latin American surrealism. She works with the image of the female body "as an extension of my own." Representing women at large in Casa de Muñecas are the string of dolls, among which is one large "Madama", a black doll in gingham. The Madama represents "a spiritual protection" in the tradition of Lugo's African heritage. The plantain leaves are a reference to Puerto Rico. The woman in the house is the house; or, we may believe, the house is the woman.
