The Tree of Life

Mirta Toledo

The Tree of Life, 2002

Screenprint

22 x 16 in

Edition of 50

A native of Buenos Aires, Mirta Toledo received her MFA from Prilidiano Pueyrredon University of Fine Arts. She moved to the United States in 1988, to Texas in 1990, and currently lives in Austin. Toledo is also a short story writer, a literary editor, and a lecturer. In her work she represents the diversity of her cultural heritage, as a Hispanic, a European, a Guarani Indian, and a Latina. In this vein, her Tree of Life portrays her father and mother, a racially mixed couple, against the background of a blossoming tree. The image resembles how many imagine Adam and Eve: naked, partially covered, in a garden. Toledo's tree of life reflects her personal background, but also extends to the diversity of humankind.
