Ida B. Wells: Telling it like it is!

Vicki Meek

Ida B. Wells:Telling it like it is!, 2002

Screenprint

16 x 22 in

Edition of 48

Vicki Meek's work has "increasingly become about the reclamation of lost memory," as much for her sake as for her viewers, "for it is through memory that all cultural context is formulated." Meek received her BFA from Tyler School of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA, and her MFA from The University of Wisconsin at Madison. She works primarily in installation and performance art, and is influenced by the Dadaist and Black Arts movements. In this print, Ida B. Wells, an African American nationalist and activist, is juxtaposed against a lynching scene. The colors used in the print conform to those of Oshun, the Orisha (or spirit) of love, feminine beauty, fertility, and art in the Yoruba spiritual system and "the blue of protection used traditionally in African art." The yellow eyes imply that Ida B. Wells is "seeing through the eyes of Oshun."
